Corrosion in the Oilfield - Pipeline Corrosion Inhibitor for Gas, Oil and Water

The production of gas and oil is often accompanied by water, either from the formation, from condensation, or from water injected as lift assist. Acid gases, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are often present in produced fluids, and oxygen is sometimes a contaminant in the water used for injection. These acid gases increase the corrosively of the waters to steel, and can significantly impact the safe operating life of production tubular and equipment, production vessels, and transportation systems.

The presence or absence of multiple phases (gas, water, and oil or condensate) in the same system can complicate the problem of controlling corrosion. The flow regime or pattern of fluids in a tubing string, vessel, or pipeline can have a significant impact on corrosivity. If a well or pipeline experiences "slug" or intermittent flow, highly corrosive conditions may exist in the area of the pipe in slug flow.

Pipelines can experience top-of-line corrosion when conditions promote the rapid condensation of water in a cooler section of the line, causing a film of water to form at the top of the line. This water at the top of the pipe becomes saturated with acid gases and corrodes the pipe. A further complication is a change in conditions, such as flow rate, temperature, and pressure over the life of a well, production or processing system, or pipeline, which can result in changing corrosivity or even a change in the potential corrosion mechanisms.

The control of corrosion in the oilfield can be a complex problem, requiring detailed analysis and a thorough understanding of the range of conditions expected during the life of the system prior to the development of a corrosion management plan. RIMPRO CORROSION INHIBITOR product line consists of a number of corrosion inhibitor formulations - some have been developed to address specific corrosion problems and others have been formulated to have wide applicability. RIMPRO inhibitor products are proven performers with a solid history of "raising the bar" in providing cost-effective corrosion protection in all oilfield operations. Applications include controlling corrosion in all types of oilfield operations, including oil and gas production, processing, and transportation systems.

Corrosion inhibitors react with the metal surface to form an impermeable film layer on it to stop galvanic corrosion through the reactions of produced oilfield materials and exploring equipments as well transporting pipe network. The organic base corrosion inhibitors or aqueous form work well in high-low temperatures or any kind of environments helps to improve the performance and efficiency of oilfield machineries with decreased down time. These specialty chemicals are the best practices to reduce the detrimental corrosion effects on oilfield plants and exploration-carrying devices.

Formulating an effective corrosion inhibitor is a complex task. Laboratory and field-testing are often required for development of a corrosion inhibitor.
The first step in formulating a corrosion inhibitor is determining the inhibitor's intended application in the oilfield production system.

Product Use High film persistent, batch Type crude oil line corrosion inhibitor designed to control corrosion in oil production systems.
Description RIM- 101 Corrosion Inhibitor* is a unique blend of filming amines and surfactants in an aromatic base solvent. This product has limited solubility in oil and water. RIM 101 inhibitor forms a very persistent corrosion inhibitor film on down hole equipment, flow lines, and most other oil handling equipment. RIM 101crude oil line corrosion inhibitor will inhibit corrosion caused by Oilfield brines, organic acids, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.
Typical Physical Properties Form @ 20°C (68°F) - Dark brown liquid
Density @ 20°C(68°F) - 0.88 0.95
Flash Point TCC >7Cf.C.(50*F)
Solubility Oil: Dispersible
Application Method RIM 101 crude oil line corrosion inhibitor should be batched into the crude oil production well, either neat, or dispersed in water or clean hydrocarbon. The quantity of corrosion inhibitor required to control corrosion is Dependent on the well depth, water cut and production. Circulation of the well may be performed to displace the crude oil line corrosion inhibitor to the bottom of the well. To treat crude oil flow lines and gas gathering lines,RIM 101 inhibitor should be dispersed in clean hydrocarbon (for example, diesel) at a ratio of 1 part of corrosion inhibitor to 1 to 8 parts of hydrocarbon. Ideally, the mixture should be displaced down the lines between pigs.

RIM 103 corrosion inhibitor is a modified, amine type additive designed to protect all oilfield tubular goods. RIM 103 inhibitor helps prevent general corrosion attack on casing, tubing and down hole tools in contact with clear completion brines. Typical Physical Properties
Typical Physical Properties Physical appearance - Dark brown liquid
Specific gravity - 1.10
Flash Point - 305°F (151.6°C) (PMCC)
Pour Point - <11°F
Applications

RIM 103 additive controls corrosion of tubing and casing strings when used in work over or Packer brines, including sodium chloride, calcium chloride, sodium bromide, calcium bromide and Zinc bromide. RIM 103 corrosion inhibitor is designed for use in clear brines but can be used in Viscosified completion or drilling fluids. Pilot testing for compatibility is recommended for this application. For treatment of clear brine fluids, one 55gal (208L) drum of RIM 103 corrosion inhibitor should be added to 100 bairels (15.9 m3) of brine. This is equal to 0.55 gal/bbl (13.1 L/m3) or 5 lb/bbl (14.3 kg/m3) RIM 103 corrosion inhibitor can be added directly to the brine without special Mixing equipment or agitation.

Product Bulletin Advantage

Protects metal surfaces in both the shallow, upper part of the well and in the deeper, hotter areas. At the recommended concentration, RIM 103 corrosion inhibitor provides protection at bottom hole temperatures up to 350°F (177°C). Protects both tubular goods and completion tools exposed to work over or clear completion brines Compatible with sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, sodium bromide, calcium bromide and moderate, density zinc bromide brine fluids
